Gary Schweitzer's '65 Mustang World's Fair/Magic Skyway convertible is headed down the home stretch of a long, exhausting restoration project.
We've been waiting more than 30 years for this moment at Mustang Monthly Magazine. We've told this story before and always like telling it again. Gary Schweitzer and his father, Al, snapped up one of 12 '65 Mustang World's Fair Magic Skyway convertibles (5F08T383386) 33 years ago from the original owner. The car had 35,000 miles showing and was in rough condition from rough Michigan winter driving. It was an extraordinary find with Thunderbird door courtesy lights, a bench seat, and Magic Skyway conveyor brackets still welded to its chassis.
For a very long time, we lost track of the Schweitzers thinking we'd probably never hear from them again. Not long ago, we received an email from Al Schweitzer advising us they were alive and well, with Gary getting ready to embark on a restoration of this historic automobile.
We gave Gary a hand with the 200ci six-cylinder engine, C4 transmission, and rear axle via technical articles in Mustang Monthly with help from National Parts Depot and Pony Carburetors primarily along with technical support from Mustangs Etc, JGM Performance Engineering, and TRC (Transmission Rebuilding Company) - all in the Los Angeles area.
Gary has been working in earnest on the Michigan coast of Lake Michigan to get body work and paint done, then put this car back together. His craftsmanship is outstanding and he's almost home.
