Solving Clutch Woes

Having clutch problems in your classic Mustang?  Consider these options.

Clutch problems are nothing new with classic Mustang owners.  The old-fashioned bellcrank clutch linkage, known as a Z-bar or equalizer bar, is a good idea in theory.  However, they've never worked very well in practical function - not even when they were new.  And when you add a stiff high-performance clutch to the equation, the news is even worse.

If you want the original feel of a factory clutch, stay with the original Z-bar/equalizer bar linkage, but go with a more civilized clutch, such as the Centerforce Dual-Friction diaphragm unit, which is easier on your linkage and left knee than a three-finger clutch. It yields the same feel without the struggles of a stiff Borg & Beck, three-finger design clutch.  It gives you grip without knee joint erosion.

If originality isn't important to you, there are options.  Modern Driveline offers two types of clutch activation packages - hydraulic and cable depending on your preference.  Both work very well and are easy to install.   Modern Driveline is there to help if you run into any problems.  We will be doing a Modern Driveline hydraulic clutch install in the coming months in Mustang Monthly.  For more information, contact Modern Driveline at 208/453-9800 or visit their website at www.moderndriveline.com.  For more information on Centerforce Clutches, call 928/771-8422 or visit their website at www.centerforce.com.
