Isham "JR" Shelby wraps up his retro Mustang fastback project also known as San Jose Number One.

We've been having a ball watching "JR" of South Carolina restore his Rangoon Red '65 Mustang fastback in record time.  In case you just tuned in, JR stumbled upon a unique find a year or two ago in a South Carolina auto repair shop - a '65 "K" engine code Mustang fastback that was forgotten and tucked in a corner.  It was an old unmolested drag racer that, ironically, had all of its original parts. What JR didn't know at the time was, he'd found 5R09K125001, the first San Jose Mustang unit for  - the equivalent of a 100001.

JR's Number One car is the first '65 San Jose fastback, the first San Jose "K" car, and quite possibly the first production '65 fastback of the three Mustang assembly plants.  Because Metuchen didn't come on line to build Mustangs until February of 1965, that narrows this race down to Dearborn and San Jose.

JR has done a magnificent job on his San Jose K fastback, doing it in a retro, yet high tech style that could easily catch on.  Look for this freshly polished gem in Mustang Monthly in the months ahead.

JR's fastback as found.
