Let's see. June is here, it's hot, and the Carlisle All-Ford Nationals is over. That must mean that the Mid-America Performance Ford and Team Shelby Nationals is just around the corner.
Scheduled for June 24-28 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jim Wicks and his crew at Mid-America will be celebrating their 35th annual event, making it one of the oldest all-Ford events in the country. As usual, the winning combination is two days (Thursday and Friday) of open track at the Hallet Motor Racing Circuit, drag racing at Tulsa Raceway Park on Saturday, and car show at the host Marriott Tulsa Southern Hills on Sunday.
In between, there's an art and memoriabilia show and cruise on Thursday, Friday night manufacturers reception, Sunday evening banquet and program, a swap meet that moves from venue to venue, and late-night bench-racing in the Marriott parking lot. The event also serves as the national convention for Team Shelby, so look for Shelby Automobiles' staff (including Amy Boylan and Gary Patterson), tractor-trailer display, and special cars.
We recently spoke with Jim Wicks and he's expecting some special vintage Mustangs, including a '70 Quarter Horse replica with a 427 Cammer, a factory supercharged '66 Shelby GT350, a Trans-Am Mustang orignally driven by Warren Tope, and a pair of '69 SCJ convertibles. He's also expecting a group of people from Ford, including Fritz Wilke and Steven Ling from Mustang marketing.
Oh, and Jim says he just got word that Carroll Shelby is planning to be there.
