This April, the adventure continues as the Great American Pony Drive, led by David Turnbull, heads out on its sixth annual trek across America immediately following the 45th Mustang Anniversary Celebration in Birmingham, Alabama.
Slated for April 20 through May 17, the Great American Pony Drive will involve local clubs, Ford dealers, and Mustang businesses, who are planning events for participants along the route.
Mustangs from all years will be along and anyone who lives near the routes or wants to participate from other areas is invited to join. The schedule is such that anyone can join for a day or two, a week or more, or even jump in and out as time allows. There will be a large number of participants from other countries, including Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Germany, and Canada.
The Pony Drive is unique because the destinations are not just shows, but activities involve other Mustang clubs, sightseeing along America’s by-ways, and traveling the back roads to see parts of America that are missed when traveling interstate highways.
The Great American Pony Drive will leave Birmingham on Monday morning, heading for New Orleans. From there, it will meander toward San Antonio, Texas, followed by San Angelo, Lubbock, Roswell, Gallup, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Monument Valley, 4 Corners, Mesa Verde, Durango (with a special trip planned on the Durango-Silverton railroad), Santa Fe, Amarillo, Mustang (Oklahoma), Branson (Missouri), and Hot Springs (Arkansas), with a side trip to the only diamond mine in the U.S. After a visit to Graceland in Memphis, the trip ends in Tupelo, Mississippi, the birthplace of Elvis.
In addition to the Pony Drive, there will be four groups traveling to the Birmingham show. The Southern Group will be coming from Florida, the New England Group from Massachusetts, the Michigan group from Battle Creek, and the Western Group with them in Texas. Check the website for specific routes and stops.
Formed to promote Mustang driving events, the Great American Pony Drive is the only MCA-chartered driving club. We are the only Mustang club that actively interacts with Mustang clubs all over the US, working with each to plan activities for the members of each club while we are visiting their area. The success of Pony Drives each year can be directly attributed to this participation with the other clubs and Mustang businesses.
