Can Anyone Explain This?

Reader John Murphy sent us these images of 1967-68 hood turn indicators with super rare socket retainers. We would like your feedback.

Here's close up of the retainer and socket.

John Murphy of Pawnee, Illinois has been restoring Mustangs for most of his adult life. He has done primarily 1965-66 Mustangs.  More recently, he and his wife, Janice, acquired a 1968 California Special hardtop.  For a long time, John has been aware of 1967-68 Mustangs with GT hoods that have turn indicator socket retainers. This socket retainer is a stamped piece of steel that keeps each socket in place using a smaller self-tapping screw. Personally, I've never seen a 1967-68 Mustang with these lamp retainers.  Can anyone explain them?  Plus - we're taking a survey.  Does your 1967-68 Mustang have them?  Are they original to the car?  If you have them, we'd like to hear from you.  We like to know model year, date code, and DSO code to see if there's a pattern.  Please respond to thesmart67@msn.com or Jim.Smart@sourceinterlink.com.
