Although our classic Mustangs are behind the times from a safety standpoint (drum brakes, lap belts, fuel tank issues, and more), there are constructive modifications you can make to your Mustang and improve safety dramatically.

We would all like to have Fuel Safe fuel cells in our Mustangs. Ain't gonna happen considering the current household budget. Tank Armor from Antioch Mustang Stable in Arizona is designed and engineered to protect Mustang fuel tanks and improve our chances of safety in a rear end collision. Tank Armor is an easy bolt in you can install in an afternoon. Improve your odds with 5/16-inch Grade 8 bolts with flat washers and lock nuts. Use at least three on each side, and four fore and aft. Bolts keep your fuel tank more secure.

A rear seat barrier from Canadian Mustang offers you further protection in a rear end collision because it provides a steel barrier between the trunk area and passenger compartment should the unthinkable happen. Most of you may be thinking fuel tank fire, but we will take it a step further. What if you have to slam on your brakes and have a really heavy object in the trunk. A rear seat barrier improves your odds against injury.

Three-point seat belts from Custom Auto Accessories afford you greater protection in an accident than lap belts or no belts at all. What's more - you won't have to drill any special holes to get the job done for front seat positions because thread bolt holes are already there. We like the idea of rear seat three-point belts for rear seat passengers as well. This is the part where you will have to drill two holes in the rear package shelf for restraint reels. However, it improves rear seat occupant safety and is worth every penny.

And finally, the greatest safety improvement you can make to a classic Mustang is power front disc brakes and a dual braking system (1965-66 only). A dual braking system, first federally mandated in 1967, gives you front or rear brakes should one or the other system fail. We like the Force 10 system from Stainless Steel Brakes, however, you have lots of choices out there.
