Is the 2008 GT500KR the quickest and fastest procduction Mustang ever?
After spending a few days making the rounds in a GT500KR, we wondered. Is this car the fastest production Mustang ever? For the short version, we're going to say "yes."
For starters, there isn't a stock vintage Mustang or Shelby that can touch this thing. Boss 9, Cobra Jet Mach, Boss 351, '71 429 SCJ, '67 GT500, '68 KR or any other, it's no contest. The new KR will spank them all. Badly.
The only cars that really might come close could be the ones that were John Coletti's finest hours; the 00 Cobra R and 03-04 Cobra. As cool as those cars are (and always will be) the supercharged 4.6 in the 03-04 Cobra or the all-motor 5.4 in the 00 Cobra R are simply not in the same ball park power-output-wise as the supercharged 5.4 in the KR. While 385 and 390 hp is impressive, 540 hp is another level to be sure.
Finally, note that while the Shelby GT500 Super Snakes at 620 or 725 horsepower are faster and generally that much nastier, these are not production cars. To get your hands on a Super Snake, you must take delivery of a GT500 and have it converted post-title to Super Snake status at the Shelby facility in Las Vegas. And for the 725-hp version, you have to forgo a factory warranty.
That leaves this car, a brand-new produiction 2008 GT500KR as the quickest, likely the fastest and clearly the baddest production Mustang of all time. It's a high-water mark that might not be topped as gas prices push $5 a gallon.
