69 or 70?

1. The '69's were, without any doubt, the best looking Mustang ever built..perhaps the best looking Ford since 1936. It seems strange to me that, inspite of that, we see so many '70's featured in published media. The design was original to the 69, but was a modified look in 1970. Anytime you modify something from the original look the result will suffer. A good eaxmple of this would be the Firebird being a modified Camaro. The Firebird never had as crisp and balanced a look as the Camaro's had.

2. That is a difficult question to answer. It’s kind of like do you blonds or brunettes, tall girls or short ones, girls with really big .... Oops, well you get the idea.

I’ve always felt those two were the best years for Mustangs. Among the engine choices were six-cylinders with 200 and 250 cubic inches. V-8’s of 302, 351W and 351C with two barrel carburetors. The next step up had 302’s, 351W and C’s, 390’s, two 428’s and 429’s with four barrels carburetors. There were economy Mustangs packages with six cylinders and 2.47 gears. There were Trans Am versions like the Boss 302, NASCAR was represented with the Boss 429, and drag racers could get the different levels of the 428 Cobra Jet with Factory Drag Packs and gears up to 4.30’s. You could get a GT package or a Mach 1. There was even a junior Thunderbird version in the Grande. There were even appearance packages so you could get the look but not the higher horsepower and insurance like with the Grabbers.

To chose between the two really comes down to a choice of four headlights or two. The other differences are fairly minor, mechanically they were very similar also.

For me, I started high school in 1969 and graduated in the spring of 1970. My first new Mustang was later in the fall of 1970 and it was a 1970 Grabber Packaged Mustang. Since then I’ve owned a 1970 Mustang convertible with 428 SCJ and Factory Drag Pack plus my present 1970 Cleveland powered, Shaker equipped Mach 1.

1970 was a very good year for me personally and is my favorite Mustang year too. Of course I’d never turn down the chance at a 1969 either.

3. I own a 69 Mach 1 and in my eyes, it has the best lines of any Mustang ever built to date; or any muscle car for that matter. 69 Fastback - Hands Down.

4. i have always thought the 70 was the best looking mustang ever produced,but that green 69 above is a exception!!

5. As you can see by my log on. I am a 69 stang guy. I had one in 69 at 27 years old and let it go when I got married. So the stang had to go. Should have been the marriage which finaly did go. Remarried and now got another 69 fastback at 64. What are they using as a model for the new cars? 69s.

6. In my opinion, 1969 and 70 were the high-water mark for Mustang horsepower and styling. Deciding which year is the best is tough. I like the front end of the 69 and the tail end of the 70. I think Ford designers picked up on this with the new design. It's interesting to note that sales dropped by 100,000 units in 1970.

8. Tough choice. I like the 69 front end but I don't like the side scoops, too fake. Give me a 69 boss 302 and I will be happy. But if you were to offer me a 70 trans am mustang then I could be just as happy. I don't think I really answered your question, did I?

9. My choice is the 69. I had a 69fb in 69,351 4bl,4sp,posi. Used to drag it 3 time a week. Didn't loose my class ti they came out with the Baracuda 340 6pack with the wide tires. He pulled me out of the hole but I gained on him at the end of the 1/4 and he beat me by a door lenght. Sorry to say I sold it to and idiot that totaled it out about 3 months later. but the engine, trans and rearend relived in a 67 fb stang. Last year I saw my latest 69fb at a car show and it didn't get away. Its rough but runs great for a 302 3sp. Got a 351 setting in the garage waiting to get rebuilt. Plan on a T5 to go behing it.

10. I prefer the 69 looks overall, even though the side scoops are not functional ( did anyone ever convert these holes to cool rear brakes or differential ? )
